Concrete Cost in Iowa

A transparent guide from a local contractor who believes in honest pricing.

Why We're Publishing Our Pricing

Most contractors won't tell you their pricing online. We think that's wrong. You deserve to know what you're getting into before you pick up the phone.

At I29 Construction, we believe in transparency. If our pricing doesn't fit your budget, we'd both rather know upfront. That saves your time and ours.

Concrete Flatwork: $6–$12 Per Square Foot

Most residential concrete flatwork in Southwest Iowa — driveways, patios, walkways, and garage floors — runs between $6 and $12 per square foot.

The wide range exists because not all concrete projects are equal. A simple 4-inch patio slab with broom finish on an accessible, flat lot costs less than a 6-inch reinforced driveway on a sloped site with decorative stamping.

What Drives Cost Up

Several factors can push your concrete project toward the higher end:

  • •Rebar reinforcement — needed for driveways, equipment pads, and heavy-load areas
  • •Decorative finishes — stamped, colored, or exposed aggregate concrete costs more than broom finish
  • •Difficult site access — if we can't get equipment in easily, it takes more time and labor
  • •Site preparation — poor soil, grading issues, or removing existing concrete adds prep cost
  • •Winter pours — heated forms and insulated blankets are necessary in Iowa winters
  • •Thicker slabs — 6-inch slabs for heavy loads cost more than standard 4-inch

What Keeps Cost Down

On the other end, several factors work in your favor:

  • •Simple rectangular shapes — basic geometry means faster form work
  • •Easy, open site access for trucks and equipment
  • •Good existing subbase that requires minimal preparation
  • •Standard broom finish — the most common and economical option
  • •Smaller project footprint

The Cheapest Bid Isn't the Cheapest Outcome

Here's what separates a $6/sq ft concrete job from a $10/sq ft job: the cheap bid often skips subbase compaction, uses thinner concrete, cuts fewer control joints, and doesn't reinforce properly.

A slab that cracks, settles, or heaves in the first Iowa winter costs more to replace than it would have cost to do right. We've seen it happen — and it's why I29 exists.

When comparing quotes, ask what's included. Site prep. Subbase compaction. Concrete thickness. Reinforcement. Control joints. Finish type. Cleanup. If a quote doesn't mention these things, ask why.
